Pakistan buys khajoor all year, and twice as much in Ramzan. Walk into any dry fruit shop or open any website and you'll see a dozen names: Ajwa, Mabroom, Kalmi, Sukkari, Irani, Aseel. Prices below are for 1 kg packs, checked at three large online date sellers in Pakistan on 5 October 2026. They change with the season and usually rise before Ramzan.

Ajwa khajoor

The most famous date in Pakistan. Ajwa comes from Madinah and is small to medium, very dark brown to black, with fine wrinkles and a soft, slightly dry bite. It is only mildly sweet. Muslims value it because of a hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari (5445) about eating seven Ajwa dates in the morning, which is why it is the date most people buy for Ramzan and for elders.

Price: Rs 3,800 to 5,300 per kg. Best for: Ramzan, gifts for parents and elders.

How to spot real Ajwa: it should be small to medium and nearly black, matte rather than shiny, soft but not sticky, and gently sweet. A price far below the usual range is a warning sign. Buy from a seller who states the origin and the packing date.

Mabroom khajoor

Long, slim and reddish brown, Mabroom is chewy with a light caramel taste and is less sweet than most dates. It is a favourite of people who find dates too sugary.

Price: Rs 3,200 to 5,500 per kg. Best for: everyday snacking and people who prefer less sweetness.

Medjool khajoor

The big one. Medjool dates are large, soft and juicy with a rich caramel taste. The variety came from Morocco; most Medjool in Pakistan is imported from Jordan and Palestine. It is the most expensive date per kilo here, and the easiest to stuff because of its size.

Price: Rs 5,000 to 7,400 per kg. Best for: gift boxes and stuffing with nuts.

Amber khajoor

Amber (Anbara) is a large Madinah date, soft and gently sweet, often sold as a premium gift date.

Price: Rs 4,300 to 5,500 per kg. Best for: gifts and guests.

Kalmi khajoor (Safawi)

In Pakistan, Kalmi and Safawi are usually sold as the same date: long, dark brown to black, soft, and medium sweet. It is a good all-rounder, sweeter than Mabroom but less sugary than Sukkari.

This is the date we use at Date Pop. Kalmi is soft enough to stuff by hand, holds a filling without splitting, and isn't so sweet that it fights the chocolate. Every one of our chocolate stuffed dates starts as a Kalmi date.

Price: Rs 3,900 to 4,500 per kg. Best for: daily eating, stuffing, and if you can't decide. How does it compare with the big Medjool? See Kalmi vs Medjool dates.

Sukkari khajoor (sukri)

"Sukkar" means sugar, and Sukkari is the sweetest date on this list. It comes from Qassim in Saudi Arabia, is golden to light brown, and is sold either soft and melting (rutab) or firmer and crunchy.

Price: Rs 3,000 to 3,800 per kg. Best for: people with a sweet tooth, and with chai.

Sugai khajoor (Segai)

Easy to recognise: Sugai is two-tone, with a light, crisp tip and a darker, softer base. Mildly sweet with a little crunch.

Price: Rs 2,500 to 3,600 per kg. Best for: a change from the usual.

Irani khajoor (Mazafati)

The soft, dark, moist dates in boxes at most shops are usually Mazafati from Iran. They are very soft, juicy and affordable; keep them in the fridge. Dry Irani dates such as Zahidi are firmer and cheaper, around Rs 600 to 700 per kg.

Price: Rs 1,200 to 1,600 per kg for Mazafati. Best for: daily iftar on a budget.

Aseel khajoor

Pakistan's own. Aseel is grown mainly around Khairpur in Sindh and is the date most Pakistani families grew up with: medium sized, soft and affordable. Much of it is also dried into chuhara.

Price: about Rs 700 per kg. Best for: everyday eating and cooking.

Chuhara

Chuhara are dates dried until hard. They are handed out at nikkahs, soaked in milk and used in cooking. Khajoor is the soft date; chuhara is the dried one.

Price: about Rs 1,300 per kg.
