Dark Chocolate Almond: badam wali khajoor, dipped in dark chocolate
What is badam wali khajoor?
In English it is an almond stuffed date. The date is slit open, the seed comes out, and a whole almond goes in its place. The almond adds crunch and a little bitterness that balances the date's sweetness, which is why the pairing has lasted so long.
There are three common versions:
- Plain: date and almond, nothing else. The classic iftar version.
- Roasted: the almond is dry-roasted first, so it is crunchier and nuttier.
- Chocolate coated: the stuffed date is dipped in chocolate, then often topped with more nuts or coconut.

How to make badam wali khajoor at home
Makes 12. Takes about 20 minutes, plus 20 minutes to set.
You need
- 12 soft dates (Kalmi or another soft, fleshy date)
- 12 almonds
- 100 g dark or milk chocolate (optional)
- Desiccated coconut or crushed pistachio to finish (optional)
Method
- Roast the almonds. Dry-roast them in a pan on low heat for 5 to 7 minutes, shaking often, until they smell toasty. Let them cool.
- Pit the dates. Make one lengthways slit in each date and pull out the seed. Keep the date in one piece.
- Stuff. Press one almond into each date and pinch it closed. You can stop here for plain badam wali khajoor.
- Melt the chocolate. Melt it in a bowl over a pan of barely simmering water, or in the microwave in 20-second bursts, stirring each time. Don't let water get into it.
- Dip. Hold each date with a fork, dip it, let the extra drip off and set it on baking paper. Sprinkle coconut or pistachio on top while it's wet.
- Set. Chill for about 20 minutes until the chocolate is firm.
Tips
- Pick soft dates. Dry dates split when you stuff them. We use Kalmi dates because they hold a filling without breaking.
- Store them in the fridge. Chocolate softens above about 20°C. Take them out ten minutes before serving.
- Make it fusion. Add a pinch of cardamom to the chocolate, or roll the dates in crushed pistachio for a wedding tray.
- Try other fillings. Kunafa and pistachio, peanut butter or coconut: here is how to make chocolate dates with four fillings.
